The prospect of Australia facing a second-string South African side has prompted punters to open their wallets and smash the Socceroos’ odds of beating the Bafana Bafana on Monday night in Sydney.
Online bookmaker Sportingbet has been forced to slash the odds of the Socceroos winning from $1.72 to $1.53, while South Africa’s odds have ballooned from $4.85 to $6.00.
A draw has also eased from $3.50 to $3.75 at Sportingbet.
“It’s been one-way traffic for the Aussies since news broke that South Africa was struggling to field a team and the way it’s going the Socceroos will start the game at much shorter odds than they are now,” Sportingbet’s Andrew Brown said.
While it’s looking increasingly likely the Socceroos will head to Brazil with a win behind them, that’s where the good news will end according to punters.
The Socceroos are clear-cut $1.28 favourites not to win a game at the World Cup and $1.06 not to qualify for the knockout stage. Australia is however $1.18 to score at least one World Cup goal.
