Uruguay defeat Ghana 4-2 on penalties to reach Semi-Final

Uruguay have advanced to a Semi-Final meeting with the Netherlands after beating Ghana 4-2 on penalties in their Quarter Final match of the 2010 World Cup at Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday.

A long shot by Sulley Muntari just before half-time gave Ghana the lead before a Diego Forlan strike just after the break pulled one back for Uruguay and the game eventually finished one-all to setup an exciting extra time battle.

In what will long be remembered for the final frantic few minutes of gripping extra-time goal mouth action where Ghana were awarded a penalty in what was basically the last kick of the game.

A late goal mouth flurry from Ghana in the dying seconds of extra-time resulted in Uruguay’s Suarez using his hands on the goal line to deflect the ball away from goal and he received a red card and Ghana were awarded a penalty kick.

The game was virtually over for Uruguay and the South Americans were in agony, especially Suarez watching from the sidelines, but Ghana’s spot kick specialist Asamoah Gyan hit the crossbar with his penalty and the final whistle blew to send the match into a penalty shootout.

Forlan scored first for Uruguay before Asamoah Gyan exorcised his demons straight away to slot his penatly away this time.

Victorino scored for the South Americans and Appiah levelled for Ghana after two penalties each.

Uruguay’s Scotti made no mistake with the next kick before Mensah arrogantly took a one step penalty that went straight to Muslera’s left for an easy parry away and Uruguay were 3-2 up.

Pereira then missed for Uruguay to even things up again, but Adiyah then missed his shot for Ghana and it was Uruguay who were up 3-2 with just one penalty left for each side.

Abreu sent Kingston the wrong way and with a 4-2 penalty shootout win Uruguay advanced to the last four of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
