Paraguay oust Japan 5-3 on Penalties after 0-0 draw at full time

Paraguay have beaten Japan on penalties after 120 minutes of play produced a 0-0 draw in their Round of 16 knockout match of the 2010 World Cup at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria, South Africa.

In a game where neither side were willing to win for fear of losing, it was up to Paraguay’s Oscar Cardozo to seal victory for the South Americans in a penalty shoot-out after Yuichi Komano missed Japan’s third spot kick.

A winner could not be found after 90 minutes and the resultant thirty minutes of extra-time also failed to deliver a victor to go through to the next round and a penalty shoot-out ensued.

After four penalties it was 2 goals apiece as Paraguay’s Barreto and Barrios and Japan’s Endo and Hasebe all slotted home from the spot.

Riveros slotted home the third penalty for Paraguay but Komano hit the crossbar to the left with the next penalty to put Japan one goal behind.

Valdez and Honda then both found the net for each side to have the shoot-out at 4-3 after four penalties each.

Cardozo cooly slammed home the next spot kick to ensure Paraguay would go through to the Quarter Finals with a 5-3 win on penalties.
