Chile gain narrow 1-0 win over Switzerland

Chile defeated a 10-man Switzerland 1-0 in their second round Group H match of the 2010 World Cup at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday.

Mark Gonzalez scored the winner for Chile at the 75th minute of the game to make it two wins from two games for the South American team.

Chile now has 6 points and will face Spain in its final match where a point will ensure qualification while Switzerland are on 3 points and are set to tackle Honduras who they will fancy themselves to beat.

First Half
Another game where questionable refereeing affected the game and they are becoming a blight on this World Cup.

Switzerland’s Valon Behrami threw an elbow towards Beausejour and Vidal, with the latter hitting the ground, and the ref immediately red carded him and the Swiss were down to 10 men after just 31 minutes.

Five cards were handed out before half-time and the score was Nil-all at the break.

First half rating (Out of 5): Chile 3.5 – Switzerland 3.5

Second Half
Chile struggled to break down the 10-men Switzerland team in the second half and the Swiss battled gamely with one player less to make Chile earn every shot.

Mark Gonzalez gave Chile the lead after Paredes crossed the ball to him from the line and his header was enough get the job done against a gallant Switzerland side.

A flashpoint almost erupted late in the game as the referee almost lost control of the game but luckily it sorted itself out without incident.

Match Thoughts

Chile took a long time to break down Switzerland but they finally managed to get the goal they required as expected to win the game.

Next is Spain and that will let everyone know how good Chile is.

Switzerland were effectively out of the game after the red card in the first half and to their credit they battled the game out tremendously well.

Next up is Honduras and they will be fairly confident of a result in that game.
