Argentina is into the last four of the 2014 World Cup after defeating Belgium 2-1 in their Quarter Final clash at Estadio Nacional in Brasilia.
An eighth minute goal to Gonzalo Higuan gave the Argentinians the early lead and it would prove to be enough for the South American team to win the match and a spot in a semi final against the Netherlands.
In a game where Argentina was always in control, it was Lionel Messi once again who would have a hand in Argentina’s match winning goal, providing the pass that eventually ended with Higuain to hit a low shot into the corner past Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
Belgium had their chances to get on the scoreboard midway through the first half when Brazilian keeper Sergio Romero was called upon to save a cracking Kevin De Bruyne strike from outside the box.
Higuain had a couple of chances to add to the scoresheet for Argentina but his first attempt was deflected wide of goal and his next clipped the bar.
The Belgians were lacking up forward against an Argentinian defense that was ripe for the occasion.
The only real concern for the Argentina was an injury to classy midfielder Angel Di Maria that may see him miss the semi final, and even the final, should they make it.
Argentina will play the Netherlands in the sem finals, their first appearance since 1990, where they eventually lost to Germany in the final.
