Brazil reach 2014 World Cup Semi Finals with 2-1 win over Colombia

Brazil has proven much too good for Colombia in their 2014 World Cup Quarter Final clash at Estadio Castelao in Brazil, winning 2-1 in a dominant display, much to the delight of their adoring home fans

Brazil came out of the blocks running and found the net after just seven minutes thanks to a lovely close range tap in by Thiago Silva, directly from a Neymar corner.

The Brazilians continued the offensive with Fred and Hulk missing chances to extend the lead, while the shellshocked Colombians had a couple of early forays forward without success, the best a thunderous shot from Juan Cuadrado that went wide of the post to the right.

Brazil dominated the first 30 minutes and they kept pressing forward to put ongoing pressure on the Colombian defence, giving their opponents little time to breathe.

Colombia settled down a little in the last 15 minutes of the first half but they lacked team cohesiveness up front to trouble Brazil too much.

In a highly attacking affair it appeared only a matter of time before Brazil would score again.

A Neymar free kick on 43 minutes was cause for concern for Colombia but he put it wide to the right and half-time would end 1-0 in favour of Brazil.

The second half was fairly even with both sides creating chances and Colombia started to get more of the ball on the hour, although they failed to do anything of note to dins a way back into the game.

A disallowed goal just past the hour for Colombia’s Mario Yepes due to offside was shortly followed by a brilliant long range free kick by Brazil’s David Luis that beat Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina pointlessly to give Brazil a 2-0 and almost unnassailable lead.

Just as Brazil were enjoying their two goal buffer, a mistimed tackle in the box by Brazilian keeper Julio Cesar on Colombia’s Carlos Bacca resulted in a penalty being awarded to Colombia with ten minutes to go.

The tournament’s leading goal scorer James Rodriquez stepped up to take the spot kick and easily slotted it past Cesar to make it 2-1 in Brazil.

And that’s how it would end as Colombia were not able to find an equaliser to take the game to extra time, despite having a number of oportunities to do so.

Brazil dominated the match and were worthy winners, saving their best for when it mattered most.

A late knock to star player Neymar resulted in him being taken from the field at the 88th minute and Brazil will be hoping he is right to take his place in the Semi Final clash against Germany.
