Group G

group-gGroup G of the 2014 World Cup will be contested by Germany, Ghana, Portugal and the USA.

Three-time winner Germany is always hard to beat at this tournament as they are generally a very good defensive side, and they look to be one of the best chances from Europe of taking home the title.

Fellow Europeans Portugal will be hard to toss during the group stages, especially with the exciting Cristiano Ronaldo leading the way for his country.

The USA and Ghana will find it a big ask to get through to the next round at the expense of Germany and Portugal and they appear to be making up the numbers in this group.

Germany is $1.53 favourite to win Group G, from Portugal $3.75, while the USA $12.00 and Ghana $13.00 are double figure odds in early betting markets.

2014 World Cup Group G Teams & Fixtures

germany Germany

Coach: Joachim Low
Gun player: Mesut Ozil
Best World Cup result: Winners 1954, 1974, 1990 (all as West Germany)

Germany qualified with ease and they have a talented squad that looks set to go a long way in this tournament. A mix of great experience combined with emerging youngsters make Joachim Low’s side one of the teams to beat in the 2014 World Cup, especially with the likes of Mesut Ozil and Thomas Muller in their ranks.

ghana Ghana

Coach: James Kwesi Appiah
Gun player: Asamoah Gyan
Best World Cup result: Quarter-finals 2010

Ghana is one of the better African nations who made it to the Quarter Finals at the last World Cup on home soil. The goal scoring ability of Captain Asamoah Gyan up front, along with midfielders Kevin-Prince Boateng and Sulley Muntari, make the Ghanians an interesting team in this group. Don’t take them lightly.

portugal Portugal

Coach: Paulo Bento
Gun player: Cristiano Ronaldo
Best World Cup result: Third 1966

Neighnours Spain put an end to Portugal’s tournament four years ago and once again they return with much reliance on the feet of the brilliant Cristiano Ronaldo. Stop the game’s biggest name and you go a long way towards stopping Portugal, which is the problem they face if they get to the next stage. The stronger defences in the next round have the ability to take Ronaldo out of the game, meaning other players will have to stand up to take Portugal further.

usa USA

Coach: Jurgen Klinsmann
Gun player: Clint Dempsey
Best World Cup result: Third 1930

The USA ended up having a comfortable path to Brazil under the guidance of Jurgen Klinsmann and they will fancy themselves to make the next round on their solid qualification form. Goalkeeper Tim Howard is hard to pass down back and if Jozy Altidore and Eddie Johnson can bring their scoring touch to Brazil then the Americans may provide tough competition in this group.
