Spain is the reigning World Cup holder and they have been one of the best teams on the planet in recent years.
The Spaniards find themselves in the same group as the team they defeated in the final four years ago, the Netherlands, making it a tough ask for the other two teams in this group.
Chile has a best result of third in 1962, but are playing in their own continent, which is a definite advantage, while Australia made the final 16 back in 2006 when they had a great tournament, but they are in rebuilding mode and will struggle against their three world-class opponents.
Spain is a clear favourite to win Group B from Holland, who is next in betting, while Chile is being kept safe in early markets.
Australia has been given little chance of progressing beyond this stage and are rank outsiders.
2014 World Cup – Group B odds
Odds subject to change and were correct at 4th May 2014.
We fancy Spain and Holland to go through to the next round.
The team that finishes second in this group will meet the winner of Group A, most likely to be Brazil, should they win their group as expected.
2014 World Cup Group B Teams & Fixtures
Coach: Ange Postecoglou
Gun player: Robbie Kruse
Best World Cup result: Last 16 2006
Australia faced minnow teams Oman, Saudi Arabia and Thailand during qualifaction and were less than impressive, now they face the might of three very good quality sides in Group B. To get to the next round would be considered a miracle for the Socceroos and realistically, the best they could hope for is to get a point or more in this group. Let’s hope they can do the country proud, but they face an uphill battle to even score against the likes of Spain, Holland and Chile, yet alone go through to the next stage.
Coach: Jorge Sampaoli
Gun player: Alexis Sanchez
Best World Cup result: Third 1962
Chile qualified for the World Cup via a tough South American group and their mix of experience and youth will make them a tough opponent in this group. The Chileans are a good attacking unit, although they may find it tough defensively against the elite sides in this tournament. Exciting youngsters Alexis Sanchez and Matias Fernandez will thrill the crowds and Chile has the ability to spring an upset in this group and make a play for second spot, perhaps at the expense of the Dutch, but most probably they will finish third in this group.
Coach: Louis van Gaal
Gun player: Robin van Persie
Best World Cup result: Runners-up 1974, 1978 & 2010
The Dutch are a bit of an enigma in world football and always promise plenty but rarely deliver, especially at this tournament. Having said that, they finished runner-up in the World Cup four years ago qualified for this year’s event in very easy fashion. Any team with woth the attacking prowess of Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben have to be respected and the Netherlands are a team to be respected.
Coach: Vicente del Bosque
Gun player: Andres Iniesta
Best World Cup result: Winners 2010
Spain will be expected to win this group and while probably not as strong as they were four years ago, the class of Iniesta and Xavi should see them come to the fore against their opponents in this group. The Spaniards can sometimes be slow off the mark but they have plenty of depth in their squad and appear the team most likely to finish top of Group B.
