Spain beat Paraguay 1-0 to book Semi Final berth

Spain have booked themselves a Semi-Final showdown with Germany after defeating Paraguay 1-0 in their Quarter Final clash of the 2010 World Cup at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday.

After a goalless first half both sides missed penalties in the second stanza before David Villa ended the deadlock at the 83rd minute to give Spain the victory and a date with the in-form Germans for a shot at World Cup glory.

Neither team was able to score in the opening 45 minutes but nobody could have foreseen the dram that would unfold in the second half.

At the 59th minute mark of the game Spain’s Gerard Pique pulled at Oscar Cardozo’s shirt whilst a corner was being taken and the referee immediately pointed to the spot for a Paraguay penalty kick.

Cardozo took the penalty himself and Spanish keeper Iker Casillas dived to his left to pull of the save and deny the Benfica striker.

Just two minutes later Spain went on the offensive and David Villa was adjudged to have been fouled in the area by Antolin Alcaraz and this time it was a penalty kick for Spain.

Xabi Alonso took the spot kick and methodically slotted it home before the referee announced he was disallowing the goal as Spain players had made their way into the box whilst the kick was being taken.

Alonso failed at his second penalty attempt after Paraguay keeper Justo Villar guessed right and went to his left to save the spot kick much to the delight of his Paraguayan team mates.

Once again it would be up to David Villa to rescue Spain as he was in the right place at the right time at the 83rd minute mark to rebound a Pedro poster and put the Spanish team into the semi finals with a 1-0 scoreline.
