Spain have defeated Portugal 2-1 in their Round of 16 knockout match of the 2010 World Cup at Green Point Stadium in Cape Town on Wednesday and now face a Quarter Final clash with Paraguay.
A David Villa goal for Spain at the 63rd minute mark in the second-half was enough to give the Spanish side the nod over their Iberian neighbour and end Portugal’s World Cup campaign.
The first-half started brightly with Spain having the early ascendancy although it produced no goals after both sides had their opportunities to score.
Spain took control in the second-half and Villa’s goal quelled the Portugal challenge and allowed Spain to pass the ball around at will.
Cristiano Ronaldo was barely seen and he continually appealed for cheap free kicks and was nowhere to be found when the ball had to be won in a contest.
Spain were too good for Portugal and once again it was David Villa who got on the scoresheet.
